when i was a child,
the world around me
had not agreed to behave normally.
cabinets were cliffs
towering towards the sun,
housing bandits and burglars
waiting on the next passing stagecoach.
towels and clothespins
were tools of power,
properly placed around
the neck allowing me
to fly and fight the
evils of the world.
forests and abandoned buildings were meant
to be explored because
of all the treasures left untouched by
mysterious creatures still undiscovered.
streams became rivers,
bikes became spaceships,
and chairs and sheets became
impenetrable forts.
the world felt larger then.
not because it was,
but because none of
it had been explained away.
